September saw the appointment of two new young sporting ambassadors; Lucy Ellis of Blessed Trinity RC College and Marsha Banks of Hameldon Community College
Lucy and Marsha applied to the programme at the end of the last school year and after a gruelling selection process which saw over 20 other potential students from across Burnley apply, were eventually successful in their appointment.
Lucy was appointed as she shows commitment and enthusiasm for all sport, she regularly volunteers at her Netball Club and has been a prolific face at many school sports events both as a competitor and as a young sports leader. Marsha was appointed as a talented performer and is continually striving for her own personal excellence in her sports of swimming and football.
The Young Ambassador programme delivered by the youth sport trust is now in its fourth year. Young Ambassadors are role models for sport, they help create more opportunities for young people to become involved in sport and physical activity. In their first year, they work in their local communities championing sport and the ethos and values of the Olympic and Paralympic movement. In the second year they take on a mentoring role with the new Young Ambassador intake.
On Tuesday 6th October they were invited to attend a national Young Ambassador Conference at Old Trafford Football Stadium. Olympic Sporting Hero’s past and present were on hand to mentor and train young sports ambassadors from across the country so they are fully prepared to carry out their role as a young ambassador. Lucy and Marsha worked closely with past Olypmian and World Champion, Badminton player Gail Emms.
Burnley’s two new Young Ambassadors will be out in about in the community and working with children from across Burnley to promote and increase sport and the Olympic values.
