Year 5 & 6 pupils from local primary schools competed for a place in the Sports Hall Athletics County Final.
Organised by Burnley School Sport Partnership, the sports hall athletics competitions have attracted 27 primary schools with over 325 school children competing for a place in the County Finals. Sports Hall Athletics enables the traditionally summer sport to be brought indoors for the winter months meaning that budding athletes can compete all year round. Events such as triple jump, long jump and indoor javelin are included in the format as well as a series of track events.
Seven schools qualified for the Borough final over a series of five heats, giving these schools the opportunity to battle it out for a place in the county final. The final was held at the newly opened Sir John Thursby Community College which gave the school the chance to show case their excellent new sports facilities.
The standard of competition was superb and all children competed to their full potential. St Stephen’s Primary School were crowned Champions, with St John’ the Baptist RC Primary School, Burnley, taking the silver medal position. Springfield Primary School won the small schools award and having less than 100 pupil’s means that they are also eligible for a place in the county final where they will join St Steohen’s as Burnley representatives. The county final will take place in February at Stanley Park, Blackpool.
Burnley School Sport Partnership’s Young Sports Ambassadors and year 9 leadership students from Sir John Thursby College led the proceedings and were responsible for the officiating of all events as well as presenting the awards at the end of the event.
