In a bid to get more girls active and involved in inter-school competitive sport, the Burnley School Sport Partnership joined forces with Burnley College to host a cheerleading event.
Whilst many girls will already be involved in cheerleading through local cheer clubs, this competition gives the girls an opportunity to represent their school in a sport that is fun and more importantly in one that they are interested in, a move away from the more traditional sports of netball, hockey and rounders.
10 teams and over 90 girls represented Shuttleworth, Blessed Trinity, Sir John Thursby and Unity at the event. The competition is set so the teams are responsible for coming up with their own cheer routine which they would practice in their own time. It was evident that the girls competing had put tremendous effort into their routines and costumes.
It was pom poms at dawn in the KS3 competitIon which was a tightly fought contest, Shuttleworth Hustlers (Shuttleworth College) took bronze medal position and with only one point separating silver and gold Trinity Tigers (Blessed Trinity) had to settle for silver medals with Unity Dance Sqad (Unity College) taking home the trophy and gold medals. The Spaceshuttles representing Shuttleworth College took Gold medals in the KS4 competition.
