On Monday 7th February Thomas Whitham Sixth Form launched its very own Sports Leadership Academy, the academy is in essence a club that will support and mentor the very best young sports leaders and volunteers from the sixth form.
Fifteen students, who were selected and identified through their school sports teachers attended the launch, which saw local lad and ex-gymnast Craig Heap deliver an inspirational speech to the students, in a bid to encourage and inspire them to volunteer and take on a sports leadership role within college and their community. Female International Ice Hockey Referee – Leigh Hetherington also told of how at the age of just 23 she had made it as a top official through volunteering.
The sixth form students will also mentor younger sports leaders from across the high schools of Burnley and will become part of the future delivery network for Burnley School Sport Partnership.
The Academy will offer training and support to the students, in order to provide a suitably qualified and motivated workforce. The academy will deliver appropriate qualifications and awards for young leaders aged 14-19, to help support their volunteering. The academy is will be jointly coordinated by sixth from teacher Sarah Maulin and Burnley School Sport Partnership.
